I first met Jim when subbing for Bob Phillips for a LYO concert in the early 80's. He was an awesome conductor ! I first performed with Jim in a bar in Niagara Falls while practice teaching there ( We did C jam blues with the house band...both happened to have our horns, and maybe a couple of beers...I think I got a pretty good evaluation) Jim continued to shadow my teaching and playing career as I'm sure he did for many others (as an adjudicator of the Peterborough Kiwanis he continued to show me the way...Egmont Overture transcription...my band wasn't quite ready for it and he appropriately "hammered" me for doing it!) He performed/mentored Cal Smith and I during our last few years leading the Peterborough Concert Band. We couldn't have done it without him. Jim was a huge influence in shaping my teaching career, and I think about him often. Jim, you and your horn are missed !!

Just two days ago I found some pictures of the LYSO trip to Banff and thought again about Jim was doing. You can tell how good a conductor is by how hard the orchestra will work for him. I remember leaving practices and concerts drenched. If you were with the orchestra in the second half of the 1970's, you could feel the energy and the resulting confidence. We held our own in Aberdeen and we brought down the house in Banff. No one who played for Jim could forget him. Rest in peace.

I wish ro express my heartfelt condolence to the family of Jim White. Jim had a great influence on my life as a musician and I consider him my mentor. I first met Jim when he adjudicated me on a trumpet solo I performed at the Kiwanis Music Festival when I was in Grade 8. Even now I remember his encouragement. I was fortunate to meet Jim many years later as an adult playing in Intrada Brass. It was always encouraging to receive Jim's "seal of approval" when he smiled at you when you played something well. I like to think that I share Jim's love and passion for music. It is obvious from the many expressions of condolence and tributes shared about Jim that he had a powerful influence on so many people's lives, especially in this wonderful world of music. Jim, you will be greatly missed.

What wonderful memories I have of Prof. Jim White from youth orchestra days, Aberdeen and Banff. Jim was a big part of my life during those fragile teenage years as well as a big influence in my career as a professional musician and teacher. I am lucky to have had him in my life. Blessings to all.

Jim was a colleague at the Faculty of Education, a fraternity brother in Beta Theta Pi and a good friend. We spent a wonderful week together at a time when we were both alone. I cherish the good times we had.

Just a note in remembrance of Jim White. I have known him since I was 14 and I passed his audition for a trombone position with the LYSO. From that moment on I considered him not just a conductor and teacher, but a friend as he fostered and encouraged my love of and mastery of music. I still work a great deal in the Toronto, GTA and Brantford area, even heading to Peterborough occasionally when my friend Rob Roy needs a sub. Jim meant so much to so many, and we owe him a great debt of gratitude. He was an inspiration to his students and those that worked under him and with him in so many musical ways. It was wonderful to see his family today at the funeral home, and the lasting tribute to him will be the influence and inspiration his students have on their students. I was deeply saddened to receive the news of Jim’s death. I first met “Mr. White” at my audition for the London Youth Symphony when I was in grade 10. My experience in the orchestra under his directorship changed my life and was a major influence in my decision to pursue a career in the performing arts. I realize that I am just of many who were influenced by his passion for music and his caring soul. The London Youth Symphony is celebrating its 50th year and as its current president I recently had the most wonderful conversation with Jim about the activities that we were planning this season to mark this historic occasion. His enthusiasm for his time with the orchestra and all who played in it was very moving. We will greatly miss his presence at our anniversary celebrations this coming May but I know that his spirit will be with everyone involved. On behalf of the London Youth Symphony, and all of the members that were fortunate to play under his leadership, I send my most heartfelt condolences to his family. Sincerely, John Crozman

I was deeply saddened to read about Jim in today's paper. He was a treasured and honoured colleague in the Faculty of Education. I still recall his exuberance, and the joy that he brought to teaching. Perhaps I should let him have the final word, typical of his sense of humour; it would be his trumpet playing the horse's neigh at the end of Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride, at the annual Christmas concert in the Faculty Cafeteria. Although this is a fuzzy scan of a Polaroid, it is one of our absolute favourites, Jim, Christmas Dinner 2007 in Hualian, complete with roast turkey and all the usual fixin', like cranberry sauce, Chinese greens, dumplings and, of course, a visit from Taiwanese Santa. An amusing evening when you were a little tentative at first, Jim, but then you declared "when in Taiwan, do as the Taiwanese do" and proceeded to join Shipei and I in eating sushi from a street side vendor, all the while Mom remained squeamish, even though she was the nurse! I knew then you were truly ready for adventure!

When I was a youth, Jim, Gail, Brad , and Kathy were neighbours on Erindale Crescent in London. Although I was not to be a musician, I will never forget one evening that Jim introduced me to Johann Sebastian Bach for the first time. I was likely seven or eight years old, and I visited when Jim was working a piece of music for the university. When I asked who the musician was, he said it was Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach. Now I had never heard of Bach before, and so when I asked Jim about this fellow, he said “Let me introduce you!” He asked me to sit cross legged on the living room floor, and told me to close my eyes. Moments later beautiful music filled the room. When I started to speak, Jim said “no, listen.” Through the piece he explained how the music of Bach was like a dialogue, where one instrument speaks, and another responds. Woodwinds and strings came to life for me. For quite some time I sat, cross-legged and mesmerized, as Jim played piece after piece, pointing out what made each instrument work as a part of this, and how they compliment eachother. Harpsicords sang, cellos resonated deeply, and I came to know of the music that Jim worked with! So very patiently he narrated the intricacies of this wonderful composer, although I am sure he was credulous that someone could live seven years and not know Bach! And so it was that I came to know Johann Sebastian Bach, from this introduction to classical music one warm summer day, so long ago. Bach would later become my refuge, and solace, through many years of university. When my father passed away, I chose Bach as the service music, remembering that warm summer night when Jim White introduced me to him for the first time. Too this day I think of Jim whenever I hear Bach at a concert or on the radio. This I think, is a fitting memory that Jim would approve of entirely.

Dear Brad, Kathy, Stephanie and Ken, tonight I learned of the passing of Jim. I am so very sorry to hear this. He was like a father to me. I will remember Jim (Mr. White to me) as a great person, teacher, and musician. After retiring from UWO, Jim returned to Lindsay where I learned as much from him as was possible before leaving for university. I remember saying to Mr. White that I didn’t think I would be able to repay him for his time and generosity. To this he confidently responded that, in fact, I would not be able but would have to pass such time, expertise and enthusiasm onto future students. To Jim’s family I send my condolences and please know that, like hundreds of others, I continue to pass along, as best I can, Mr. White’s love for people and music.

Jim was the first person to speak to me when I first joined Intrada. I immediately felt his positive energy and warmth. He was one of those people whose light filled a room and who, by a simple smile or word of encouragement, made you feel as if you could achieve great things in all you did. Jim will always be "Mr White" to me. When I was a wee student 13 years old at GA Wheable he looked so tall and he could really play the trumpet too. He took my natural love for music and showed me the way to make it my profession. Despite the great numbers of students he taught , he always took time to make me feel special. Always kind words and words of encouragement.Plus I remember how cool he was when he arrived at school in his brand new '64 chev convertible. The other kids at school loved him too. And I mean loved.When I left London to play professionally he was eager to hear from me about my experiences( and I to tell him about them) and for many years we kept in touch.I am grateful that I had a chance to see him again at the Wheable reunion two years ago. I only regret that I did not know of his illness. He was a huge influence in my life and in the lives countless others. My sincere condolences to the White family on this sad occasion.

I was saddened to hear of Jim's passing and I offer my condolences to all the family. Coincidentally he was the topic of conversation among fellow brass players at a gig in Stratford just ten days ago. As a member of his first class at Althouse I remember that one of his many qualities, which all great teachers have, was to make his students want to succeed for him. He instilled confidence by expressing his confidence in us. And when some of us were associate teachers for Althouse (even as first year teachers) we became instant, respected colleagues. I remember the great respect he had for fellow musicians such as Jim Ford, and the wonderful party he hosted at the lake for Jim because he wanted him to be feted by his friends while he (Jim F.) could still really enjoy a good party. Finally I admired his enthusiasm to pursue new musical challenges. When I was playing cruise ships he jumped on the idea for himself and went through the many steps to qualify. Unfortunately the right opportunity never came for that adventure. We'll all miss Jim.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of the man who had such a significant impact on my life. Jim White was my music teacher and mentor for five years at G.A. Wheable Secondary School in London. No other teacher ever influenced me the way that he did. He made me feel that I was special and it was because of his encouragement that I pursued the teaching profession. He also instilled in me a lifelong love of making music. Our paths crossed several times over the past forty years and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to thank him for giving me the confidence in my abilities that allowed me to follow my dreams. I was very sad to see the paper and the passing of a former teacher and friend from G A Wheable that I loved very much. He was a really beautiful person that cared of every student and person he came in contact with. He had a musical gift that was near impossible to duplicate. My condolences to all of Jim's family. He was a great man, with many talents. I had the privilege of working closely with Jim during his "brassroots days." What a great musician he was. I also had the privilege of being taught to fly by Jim. He also had a love of flying.. I was able to return the favour years later when Jim asked to get current again as a pilot. I taught him then, but he really didn't need any teaching, he was an excellent pilot. I learned so much from him, he will be greatly missed by me.

I met Jim at a golf course I worked at in London and always enjoyed seeing him walk thru the door. We shared some good conversation and laughs. We also played as team-mates in a few club events which was always a pleasure. I was profoundly saddened when I heard of Jim's passing. He was my Music Education mentor at Althouse as well as my faculty supervisor for much of my student teaching. I was saddened to hear of Jim's passing. He was a great teacher, mentor and friend. I first met him when I was in high school nearly 40 years ago, when he often came to visit our music classes. I had the priviledge of performing under his direction for many years in the London Youth Symphony, and later had him as my professor at Althouse College. Over the years, our paths have crossed, be it at music festivals, concerts or classroom observations, and each meeting was alike a reunion of old friends. As I look at at my own career and teaching practice, I see Jim's influence, as do thousands of other teachers. His legacy to music education is huge. Thank you, Jim!

I was so sorry to learn of Jim's passing but also realize that he has been in pain for some time. I was a student at the Faculty of Education in 1982-83 and have fond memories of witnessing Jim's passion for music education on a regular basis. I had the pleasure of being Jim's student once again when I completed my honour specialist music course two summers later and remember a lovely BBQ celebration at the house following the completion of the course. When I saw Jim in the years and decades following, I was amazed that he seemed to be able to track the careers and lives of all his former students. He was so proud of all of us all and we were pleased to make him proud! Jim's family can be assured that Jim's legacy as a teacher, musician and passionate advocate for music education will live on in his former students and their students. I am very sorry to hear of Jim's death. I first met him at Ontario Youth Music Camp in 1969 where I was a camper and he was an instructor. After my graduation from Music Education studies at UWO, I attended the Faculty of Education in 1976-77 where Jim was my music professor. He taught us so many practical things which prepared us for our careers in music education. I continued to employ several of the techniques Jim taught us throughout my entire career as a secondary school music educator. I was always happy to see him from time to time after graduation at conferences and enjoyed following his musical endeavours in Brassworks, etc. particularly after his retirement. My deepest condolences go to Jim's friends and family.

Our sincere condolences to Jim's family. We have know Jim since High School in Fenelon Falls and we are very proud to call him our friend. He was an amazing musical genius who made his life's work doing something he loved from a very early age. We have very fond memories of our younger days with Jim that we will always hold dear. You have lost a wonderful husband, father, brother and grandfather but your memories will always remain with you. His accomplishments were amazing and yet he was such a down to earth gentleman and so happy in his return to Fenelon Falls in retirement. We will certainly miss his smiling face and wonderful humor around town, but also know that he is at peace playing his music with the angels. God Bless everyone of you at this very difficult time.
