Dear Janice & Dean, I have just heard of your Mom's passing and wanted to offer my sincere condolences. I am the youngest daughter of Alex & Sharon Kernohan, and the Granddaugter of Annie Kernohan. I have many fond memories of your Mom when I was a young girl. She reminded me so much of my Nana. I'm sorry I didn't know before now, as I would have come to offer my condolences at this time. Youngest child of 1st generation Canadian pioneers (John and Ethel Kennettle)

She lost both parents by age 23

Attended the old brick schoolhouse behind the United Church, where she went to grade 11, as grade 12 was not offered in Kinmount. Her favourite subject was Latin.

She was very close to her Aunt Lizzie, her father’s sister, who lived in Kinmount. Joy spent a lot of time at the Gilmour house, going to school, helping her Aunt and having fun with her friends. She had lots of mates, including Bernice, Betty and Doris. Once there was a fire, and Joy ran up to the Anglican Church to get them to ring the bell to summon the firefighters….the house was saved!

She started working in 1944 at housekeeping cottages at Nogies Creek, then went to Lindsay to work at Horne Brothers’ Woollen Mill making Hudson Bay Blankets. She also worked at Silverwood Dairy, in Lindsay. She boarded at Gilkinson’s and Carew’s. She bought a silver set and other items for her ‘hope’ chest at stores in downtown Lindsay. Her friends and her would go to dances around the area.

She met Rolf, the love of her life, after he and his parents moved to the Dutch Line Road in 1946. The Stanges had bought the Coben farm and raised turkeys and pigs and farmed the land. Rolf and Joy courted and got engaged and were married by Walter Rackham, the United Church minister in Lindsay, at his house, on Saturday July 23, 1955.

Janice was born in 1957 and Dean in 1958. They all enjoyed a lot of family holiday gatherings with lots of cousins to play with.

So the kids are in school and life has settled down, there’s church every Sunday, and now it’s time to get back to work…..because milking cows and feeding chickens and haying just wasn’t enough…..

-Joy wins a contract to use her car as a ‘school children’ vehicle, buses Janice and Dean to Kinmount Public School. Joy once slid off the road during an ice storm, and drove right back out of the ditch, never stalling or stopping.

-Joy takes a typing course in Fenelon Falls to help her embrace the new technology

-Joy worked as a telephone operator at Jack Marks in Kinmount

-Joy sells eggs in town, trades eggs for a used bike for Janice

-Joy, although she hated water, and especially icy water, jumped into the creek once to save a small drowning calf, in the middle of winter.

-Joy takes a real estate course, worked for Owen Johnson and Walter Frank Realtors

-Joy is member of Orange Lodge (Kinmount). She calls bingo in the Orange Hall, prizes include bags of sugar and other grocery items

- Joy joins Eastern Star (Fenelon Falls), attends conferences and meetings. She once met the Russian hockey team in the Royal York.

-Joy is very active in the United Church and UCW in Kinmount. She bakes pies and peels potatoes for the Kinmount Fair Dinners, served under the old grandstand, then in the arena. She led the Sunday school and Choir, and for many years, had Dean and Janice cut the grass and shovel snow at the Church. There were some Sundays that the whole congregation fit in our car….Mom had picked up and delivered each and every one to church. One time, after picking up Flossie Sherman and Marion Macdonald, she forgot Dean on the street, until she got to church…..lucky Dean knew the way.

-Joy started 4-H Homemaking club in Kinmount, bringing together the young girls in town to help guide them in home economics. We sewed, and cooked and baked and gardened our little hearts out.

-Joy even ran for public office, councillor, for Galway and Cavendish in 1970, as a ‘housewife’. She lost, but the township’s loss was our gain.

-Joy ran the concession stand at the arena, as Rolf flooded the ice, serving hot chocolate, chocolate bars and hot dogs to weary players, and fans. She would help the little ones with their laces, and cuddle little broken hearts.

-Joy’s namesake, her great Aunt Mildred, passed in 1975 and it was with this inheritance she bought the M&H Dairy Freeze in Baddow. Here she came into her own and really had fun with her footlong hot dogs and all that soft ice cream and oh those hot fudge sundaes!! A lot of her kid’s friends found a home sitting in the kitchen with her, there, trading stories and planning the next big adventure! She loved to be involved with young people, she had the energy and spirit to understand them. She worked long hours, but never wavered in her commitment to her customers and employees. She owned it for 9 years, age 50 to 59.

-Joy never flew in an aircraft, but did cross the U.S. border once. She also visited Ottawa, Bala, North Bay, Kitchener and Niagara Falls.

-Joy started line dancing and it wasn’t long before she started teaching the Kinmount ladies the boot scootin’ boogie! She even went to a Billy Ray Cyrus concert at Maple Leaf Gardens! She organized Line Dance parties and gave the proceeds to charities. No doubt this fulfilled her life-long teaching ambition.

-Joy enjoyed 3 grandchildren, and her memory will be fondly passed along by them to future descendants. Joy was all about family pride and history. We were lucky to have her knowledge when the family tree was being researched.

I don’t remember Mom complaining much about physical pain. There was one time she was having an attack of diverticulitis, she was upstairs going back and forth from the bathroom to the bedroom, when suddenly, she came downstairs with a packed suitcase, certain she was doomed for the hospital. I took her to the doctor who assured her that she would be fine after a while. Crisis averted.

Joy never drank or smoked, or swore. She hated drinking water. She hated being in water. She could find 4-leaf clovers anywhere. She loved watching horses race, especially the Kentucky Derby. She disliked little flashing lights of electronics. She was not fond of sardines, but she did like marmalade. She was forever stealing those little packets of jam or sugar from restaurants. She liked red no matter what colour it was. She liked her high instep. She liked Tim’s French vanilla with a Boston cream doughnut. She liked flannelette sheets year-round. She liked to time us when we left her so she would phone as soon as we unlocked our door. She was more of a baker than a cook. She loved driving. She loved Queen Elizabeth and the royal family. She loved coconut and chocolate, especially together.

Her life was a mix of teaching and learning, bewilderment and confidence, planning and luck, being alone and being surrounded, and she embraced it all. She didn’t often keep her thoughts to herself but she’ll be forgiven for that. Anyway, it’s more about what we do, not what we say, in this life…..and she did her best.
